UDP-glucose-glycoprotein glucosyltransferase (Uggt) encodes an enzyme that recognizes glycoproteins with folding defects and adds glucose to N-glycans near the misfolded part of the protein. Uggt product is a component of the calnexin cycle and promotes protein folding in the endoplasmic reticulum along with the protein encoded by Cnx99A and Calr. [Date last reviewed: 2018-09-13]

UniProt Contributed Function Data
Recognizes glycoproteins with minor folding defects. Reglucosylates single N-glycans near the misfolded part of the protein, thus providing quality control for protein folding in the endoplasmic reticulum. Reglucosylated proteins are recognized by calreticulin for recycling to the endoplasmic reticulum and refolding or degradation.

Uggt transcripts are detected at low levels in early embryos, peak at 10-12 hours and are undetectable by 18-20 hours. They are detected again from the 2nd instar stage to pupation. Uggt expression was observed in cells of all tissues in embryos.
