Mates of CG9997dsRNA.Sym.Scer\UAS Scer\GAL4αTub84B.PL males show no difference in conformational stage distribution when compared to mates of control males. In defensive sperm competition, assessed with a second mating on the third day after the initial mating, mates of CG9997dsRNA.Sym.Scer\UAS Scer\GAL4αTub84B.PL knockdown males sire a higher proportion of progeny than do control siblings.
Males depleted for CG9997, through expression of CG9997dsRNA.Sym.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4αTub84B.PL, do not significantly differ from controls in the overall number of eggs laid. Males depleted for CG9997, through expression of CG9997dsRNA.Sym.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4αTub84B.PL, do not stimulate full egg laying in their mates. However, from days 2-10 after the start of mating, the number of eggs laid by the mates of CG9997dsRNA.Sym.Scer\UAS-Scer\GAL4αTub84B.PL males is reduced significantly compared to controls. Consistent with the reduced egg laying, females mated to CG9997dsRNA.Sym.Scer\UAS flies exhibit significantly lower fertility compared to controls. Females mated to CG9997dsRNA.Sym.Scer\UAS-Scer\GAL4αTub84B.PL males show low receptivity to re-mating 24 hours after the initial mating. At 4 days after the start of mating, mates of CG9997 knockdown males are significantly more receptive to mating than controls. Females mated to CG9997dsRNA.Sym.Scer\UAS-Scer\GAL4αTub84B.PL males do not differ significantly in the number of sperm in storage at 2 hours after the start of mating. However, at four days after the start of mating, females mated to CG9997dsRNA.Sym.Scer\UAS-Scer\GAL4αTub84B.PL knockdown males have significantly more sperm stored in the seminal receptacle when compared to controls. By ten days after the start of mating, females mated to CG9997dsRNA.Sym.Scer\UAS-Scer\GAL4αTub84B.PL knockdown males, have significantly more sperm stored in their seminal receptacle compared to controls.
