mir-9aE39/mir-9aJ22 mutant flies have a reduced body length, wing length and pupal volume. Haemolymph glucose and trehalose levels are also reduced.
Homozygous and mir-9aJ22/Df(3L)ED228 males show a significant decrease in median lifespan compared to controls. Homozygous adults show significant defects in the hemolymph-brain barrier (as determined using a dye injection assay).
Homozygotes and mir-9aJ22/mir-9aE39 animals lack approximately 50% of the posterior wing margin in all individuals and approximately 10% of animals also show mild loss of anterior wing margin. Abundant cell death is seen in the wing pouch region of the wing disc in mir-9aJ22/mir-9aE39 third instar larvae, in contrast to wild-type controls. Cell death is not seen in the pronotum region of the disc in the mutant larvae. Homozygous and mir-9aJ22/mir-9aE39 adults show a mild increase in notum microchaete density compared to controls. mir-9aJ22/mir-9aE39 adults often have ectopic dorsocentral and anterior postalar bristles.
mir-9aJ22 homozygous flies lack anterior and posterior wing margins. Heterozygotes show normal wing development.
Homozygous mir-9aJ22 mutants exhibit posterior wing margin defects. No defects are seen in heterozygous mir-9aJ22 flies. A mir-9aJ22/+ background enhances the wing margin defects seen when mir-9asponge.Scer\UAS.T:Avic\GFP-EGFP is expressed under the control of Scer\GAL4αTub84B.PL.
29% of mir-9aJ22 third instar larvae have an extra ddaE or ddaF neuron in one or two but not other hemisegments. Mutant adults lack the posterior wing margin (100% penetrance), while the veins are normal in appearance. The anterior wing margin contains ectopic sensory bristles in about 40% of mutant flies. 14.3% of mutant flies have 3-4 scutellar bristles per heminotum (instead of the wild-type number of 2 per heminotum). These extra bristles have normal shaft and socket cells and are accompanied by a sensory neuron. Mutant third instar wing discs have a high frequency of ectopic sensory organ precursors (SOPs) in the notum region.

The loss of wing margin seen in mir-9aJ22 flies is completely suppressed by Bxhdp-n60. The wing margin phenotype seen in BxD124/Y and BxD128/Y flies is enhanced by mir-9aJ22/+.
One copy of sensE58 substantially rescues the wing margin defects of mir-9aJ22 homozygotes; about 30% of the double mutant flies have wings that are indistinguishable from wild type, while others lack only a small part of the posterior margin. The bristles on the anterior wing margin resemble wild type in the double mutant flies.
